Codependency is a behavioral and emotional condition characterized by an excessive reliance on other people for validation, identity, and a sense of self-worth. It often involves a pattern of enabling, controlling, or sacrificing one's needs to maintain relationships, even at a personal cost. Codependent individuals may derive their value from helping or "fixing" others, often to their own detriment.
Codependency typically stems from unresolved childhood experiences, such as growing up in environments with neglect, abuse, or substance use disorders. It creates patterns of people-pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries, low self-esteem, and fear of abandonment. These behaviors can lead to unhealthy dynamics in relationships, where one person overly depends on the other emotionally, mentally, or physically.
Healing from codependency involves cultivating self-awareness, setting healthy boundaries, fostering self-love, and developing independence in thoughts and actions. By addressing the root causes and learning to prioritize their own needs, individuals can create healthier and more balanced relationships.
